At Rituality Wellness, we offer ADHD evaluations for adolescents and adults ages 12 and up, either in person at our Haymarket office or by telehealth throughout Northern Virginia.
How is adult ADHD diagnosed?
Through a clinical ADHD evaluation that reviews your childhood history, current symptoms across more than one setting, how much they interfere with daily life, and other conditions that can look similar.
Rating scales support the assessment. Formal neuropsychological testing is not routinely required to diagnose ADHD, although it can be useful when the clinical picture is more complex or needs clarification.
An ADHD evaluation treats the condition as developmental, so symptoms have to trace back to childhood even if nobody named them at the time.
That’s why the history matters. Old report cards, observations from a parent or caregiver, and patterns across school, work, and relationships can all help provide context when reconstructing how symptoms have appeared over time.
Do I need neuropsychological testing?
Usually, no. Formal neuropsychological testing can be valuable in complex or unclear cases, but it is not routinely required to diagnose ADHD.
For many adults, a comprehensive clinical evaluation that includes symptom history, developmental history, functional impairment, rating scales, and consideration of other possible explanations provides the information needed to determine whether ADHD is present.
Additional testing may be recommended when the clinical picture is less clear.
What does adult ADHD actually look like?
ADHD in adults does not always look like obvious hyperactivity. For some people, it shows up more as internal restlessness, difficulty staying organized, starting tasks without finishing them, losing track of details, procrastinating, or feeling exhausted from the effort required to keep everything together.
A symptom people do not always associate with ADHD:
Some adults with ADHD also experience difficulty regulating emotions. Frustration, irritability, or other feelings may come on quickly and feel unusually intense or difficult to settle.
Emotional intensity is not itself diagnostic of ADHD, but it can be an important part of the clinical picture for some people.
What treatment involves
Choosing an option
Stimulant and non-stimulant medications are both options. The appropriate approach depends on your symptoms, medical history, other conditions, treatment goals, and individual response.
Adjusting
When medication is appropriate, finding the right medication and dose may take some adjustment over time.

A 41-year-old operations manager in Bristow books after her son’s ADHD assessment. Reading the parent questionnaire, she answered most of it about herself.

How long does an ADHD evaluation take?
An ADHD evaluation runs longer than a standard medical appointment, because the history is the diagnosis. Exact appointment lengths are listed on the booking page.
What if I've been told I'm just anxious?
Bring that. Anxiety and ADHD coexist frequently, and anxiety is often the downstream result of years of undiagnosed executive function difficulty. Both can be treated.
